On the afternoon of 02 May 2026, Mayon Volcano erupted violently, sending thick ash clouds and pyroclastic flows across several towns in Albay, including Legazpi City, Camalig, and Guinobatan. The eruption affected 124 villages and nearly 200,000 residents. With the volcano remaining under Alert Level 3, authorities strictly enforced the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone and ordered the evacuation of thousands of families, leaving more than 5,400 residents in temporary shelters.
Following reports from Antonio S. Tan, Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI) Vice President and Bicol Chapter Coordinator, on the conditions faced by affected communities, CFBCI President Gerald Chan immediately convened an emergency meeting. The organization promptly approved a humanitarian relief initiative aimed at providing urgent assistance and supporting disaster-stricken residents during this critical period.
The relief operation, coordinated by Vice President Tan with the support of local government units and social welfare offices, was carried out from May 13 to 17 in heavily affected areas such as Camalig and Guinobatan. Prioritizing underserved communities that had yet to receive government aid, CFBCI introduced a voucher-based assistance program, distributing ₱300 relief vouchers that beneficiaries could use at local LCC malls to purchase essential goods according to their immediate needs. Through this flexible and needs-based approach, the operation assisted around 2,000 disaster victims.
Local officials, including Guinobatan Mayor Ann Gemma Ongjoco and Camalig Mayor Carlos Irwin G. Baldo, Jr., commended CFBCI for its swift and compassionate response, noting the effectiveness of the voucher system in addressing urgent community needs. President Chan emphasized that while natural disasters bring hardship, compassion and solidarity remain vital, reaffirming CFBCI’s commitment to continuing relief and recovery efforts for affected communities around Mayon Volcano.
