On 05 May 2026, officers of the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI), led by Gerald Uy Chan, formally conducted the turnover of relief donations to support local workers assisting in the response to the fires at the Navotas City Landfill. The ceremony was graced by Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco at Navotas City Hall. On behalf of CFBCI, Director Gregorio Lagamayo and Director Fausto Tiu, together with committee vice chairpersons and plenary members, were also in attendance at the event.
Prior to the turnover ceremony, officers of CFBCI met with Mayor Tiangco in a conference room, where the mayor personally provided a detailed account of the events surrounding the fire at the Navotas City Landfill.
He reported that the 44-hectare landfill has been continuously burning since April 10, necessitating approximately 300,000 tons of soil to effectively extinguish the fire through landfill fire suppression and slope stabilization measures recommended by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which previously conducted a field demonstration at the site.
In close coordination with key government agencies, including the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the city government has made significant progress in controlling the fire.
Guided by JICA’s technical recommendations, the city has implemented systematic soil covering and compaction operations to prevent further fire spread. Additionally, the immediate construction of a concrete access road connecting the landfill island to the mainland has expedited response and operational efficiency.
Having rendered continuous service for nearly a month, the landfill workers were identified as deserving beneficiaries of relief assistance, prompting CFBCI to conduct its Operation Brotherhood in the city. A total of 170 relief packs were turned over to the local government, each containing premium rice, biscuits, soap, alcohol, face masks, and instant noodles.
Through this small gesture of kindness, CFBCI hopes to provide meaningful support to local workers while reinforcing the government’s efforts to safeguard the welfare of its citizens. As a business organization, CFBCI remains committed to extending assistance in times of need and fostering collaborative initiatives that promote resilience, public safety, and community well-being.
