On 27 July 2024, the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI) headed to the Province of Bulacan to conduct a series of relief operations for the unfortunate victims of Typhoon Carina. On behalf of the organization, Honorary President Stephen Tan Sia, Director William Rogando, Director Willy Chion Wong, Director Richard Alviar, Vice Chairman Henry Tiu, Vice Chairman Eduardo Ting Tiu, Plenary Member Linda Lao, Plenary Member Samuel Bernard Sia, and English Secretary Mexica Bausa began their whole-day journey at seven o’clock in the morning to distribute relief packs to the residents of four municipalities in Bulacan.
Heavy rains drenched Luzon on Wednesday, July 24, triggering floods in Manila and nearby provinces as Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) intensified the Habagat or southwest monsoon. To alleviate the difficulties experienced by Filipinos displaced from their homes due to intense rain and flooding, CFBCI President Samuel Lee Uy immediately called for an emergency meeting with the Board of Directors to plan out a series of relief operations. Through the kind assistance and cooperation of the office of Senator Imee Marcos, CFBCI has laid out an operation that will extend assistance to 2,000 families in Guiguinto, Hagonoy, Calumpit, and Meycauayan in Bulacan.
On Friday, July 26, scholars and alumni of the CFBCI Pagharap sa Pangarap College Scholarship Program completed the packing of 2,000 relief bags each containing 2-kilo premium rice, 2 cans of corned beef, 2 cans of sardines, and 2 cans of meat loaf. The next day, CFBCI officers and members arrived at their first destination in Guiguinto Municipal Athletic & Cultural Center. The group was received by the local government of Guiguinto Bulacan who expressed their deepest gratitude for the donation which will be distributed to 500 families in the municipality.
Afterwards, the group headed to the municipality of Hagonoy, Bulacan and reached Eugenio Sytamco Elementary School at 10:30 A.M. The barangay chairman of San Isidro, Hagonoy, Hon. Nene Balatbat, and Chief of Police Hagonoy, Lt. Col. Aldrin Thompson, thanked the organization on behalf of their kababayans. Director Richard Alviar conversed with the residents and emphasized the commitment of CFBCI in assisting the government in its welfare projects. A total of 500 families also benefited from the donation.
After the operation in Hagonoy, heavy rain poured and the group experienced some difficulty due to flooded routes to the third municipality. Nevertheless, through their unmatched determination, the group successfully arrived at Purok 3, Iba O’Este, Calumpit, Bulacan. Barangay chairman Alex Manio warmly accepted the group and led the distribution process. Despite their tragic fate, a total of 500 families received the relief packs with huge smiles on the faces.
Lastly, the group headed to Meycauayan City Hall for the official turnover of relief packs with the presence of Mayor Henry Villarica and Ms. Pia Ramirez Delos Santos, City Administrator. Mayor Villarica ensured that the donated 500 relief packs will be distributed to the families gravely affected by the overflow of Meycauayan River during the onslaught of the typhoon. Both parties exchanged warm words of gratitude and appreciation, and looked forward to future collaborations in benefit of the people of Meycauayan. At around five o’clock in the afternoon, the group traveled back to Manila with hearts beaming with fulfillment and joy from altruism.
